From the Merriam Webster Dictionary:
2: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; also : the capacity for this
- Every living thing is empathic to some extent because empathy is one of the oldest forms of non-verbal communication. Scientists speculate that humans or “Homo Erectus” started talking about 100,000 years ago, but they can’t decide if language began as soon as the human brain became big enough, or if it developed slowly over time.
- If you have a pet chances are that you have developed better empathic skills than the typical non-pet owner because animals are better empaths than humans and pets have a tendency to “teach” their owners a thing or two.
- You are most empathic when you are a baby before you say your first words. The ability then fades because language is used as a replacement but it does not go away and it can be enhanced through meditation.
- People who have a connection to plants and nature also tend to be more empathic. While some literally “talk” to their plants to help them grow, others naturally give their plants energy and attention and the difference in plant growth is tangible.
- Psychics and mediums can be painfully empathic as a side effect of their ability to communicate with disembodied spirits, elementals, angels, demons, fairies, etc …
While the ability to communicate non-verbally with everything can be a gift, the inability to “turn it off” at will can be maddening and at the very least uncomfortable. In my case I was already super tense after the volleys between Trump and Kim Jong Un that I had a persistent ache in the pit of my stomach. But after the riots in Charlottesville I literally felt like I was about to throw up for days. I felt the hodge podge of fear, despair and rage in waves and I had to force myself to not look at the news. Meanwhile, places that had large concentrations of people like the grocery store, Walmart, or the mall were stricly off limits until things settled down on the surface.
Feeling Overwhelmed: Feelings of being overcome or overwhelmed literally came out of the blue. News sites showed me what I was reacting to and that helped me sort out my true feelings from what emotions I was being bombarded with.
Upset Stomach: The stomach is where most people carry their emotions. It is no coincidence that we call our most important feelings as “a gut feeling.” My gut was suffering under the weight of the public emotional outpouring of reactions to a possible nuclear war and the threat of rampant racism.
Nausea: As tensions mounted I literally felt like I was having chronic morning sickness. It took a day for me to get over feeling like I wanted to vomit every hour.
Anxiety and Depression: As a result of a combination of all the symptoms mentioned above, I began to get anxious and depressed.
Chronic Fatigue: My body reacted by slowing down and the best medicine for me was to nap for hours in order to “make it go away” because in sleep and through dreams I was able to release a lot of psychic tension.
Sharing What I’ve Learned
Just as the madness was breaking out on the newsfeeds I saw a lot of ads for classes and I was astonished at the amount of woo and silliness people were trying to push on suffering empaths around the globe. So, I decided that I would freely share what I do from day to day to cope with the chaos.
- Feeling Overwhelmed/Grounding: I am fortunate to live in a pretty little witchy house at the foot of the mountains. Every morning before I water my little potted patio garden filled with herbs and roses I take off my shoes. I spend a lot of my time barefoot in the garden which allows my tension to be released through the bottoms of my feet. I refocus my attention on my plants and ask them to take away my tension. During the worst times I put my hands on my little ficus tree and imagine my energy going down through the trunk of to tree into the Earth.
- Upset Stomach & Nausea/Ginger Everything: While I wish I had enough time to peel, crush and grind fresh ginger root into a tea every day, I’m far too busy for that. Making fresh ginger tea is a luxury, so I stock up on ginger ale, ginger chews (candy) and ginger snaps (my favorite cookie) so I have something quick and easy to help me calm my stomach and alleviate my nausea.
- My friends and favorite tv shows as well as meditation/Anxiety and Depression: I meditate and do mantra at least 20 minutes every day. Sometimes I may get lost in it for up to an hour because being in alpha state feels great. However, there is nothing like a convo with a good friend or an episode of “Game of Thrones” to pull me out of a funk. John Oliver has been good for my soul. And frankly, I miss Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart was my comedy shaman who cured all ills.
- Naps and Early Bed Times/Chronic Fatigue: When all else failed I am sooooo grateful to be working primarily from home. I have the luxury of taking a nap whenever I feel the need. When I am working outside of my domestic sanctuary of peace and chocolate I come home with take out, or nuke an organic microwave dinner and drop off to sleep no matter who early it is.
Emergency Empath Hacks
- Wearing Amber and Black Tourmaline jewelry to seal up my aura.
- Taking cleansing baths in epsom salts and baking soda.
- Playing my favorite music to raise the vibe and drown out everything else. (Amy Winehouse has saved my life.)

As I’ve said during the beginning of this Retrograde cycle the 3 planets to work with that neutralize the negative aspects of the Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are the Earth, the Sun and the Moon. It is during the New Moon that the Earth the Moon and the Sun are perfectly aligned. The caveat is that we cannot see the moon because the Sun is shining on its dark side. So in perfect retrograde form, corrections and magick can be made, but in utter secrecy to match the total darkness. The Sun and the Moon representing the conscious and subconscious are impacting the Earth but in darkness and not in light.
Power is manifested during secret workings and circumstances.
This Mercury Retrograde I am doing a mala (108 repetitions counted on a strand of beads or rosary) to Saraswati every day. In my experience as a Kashmir Shaivist both masculine and feminine energy must be present in order to achieve a desired effect. I being by chanting 108 repetitions of the Mantra to Lord Ganesha. AUM GUM GANAPATAYE NAMAHA.
Ganesha, son of Shiva (the Destroyer) and Parvati (Shakti or Divine Feminine aspect that rules Love and Devotion) is the “Remover of Obstacles.” While some Western Traditions correspond Ganesha with the planet Mercury, Ganesha in fact rules Ketu (the South Node of the Moon) so he is not influenced by planetary transits. Hence, he is immune to the Mercury Retrograde. He is chanted to first in order to “open the doors” to the Gods.
Feminine (Active Energy):
Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom, Music and the Arts is also linked to Mercury in that she also rule Vak, which is another word for “Divine Speech.” She is important to me because “Divine Speech” is essential to proper channeling and psychic readings, etc … As a writer and a singer, Saraswati has been in my subconscious and conscious from a very early age. So, while Western Tradition put an emphasis on Venus (for the Arts) and Athena (Wisdom) we can see that these two energies are almost contrasted since Venus and Athena are polar opposites. In contrast Saraswati embodies all these qualities and for me embodies are more balanced, well rounded, cultured woman.
A popular beej manta for Saraswati is: AUM SHREEM HREEM SARASWATI NAMAHA.
Both mantras said in sequence with the Masculine first (grounding) and the Feminine next (Active Energy) make a complete “circuit.”
I have found that this lessens the worst aspects of Mercury Retrograde making possible disasters into minor mishaps. If you are a creative person, writer, artist, musician, actor or dancer, Saraswati and her energy should resonate very well with you.
I am also offering Mercury Retrograde Readings through Mercury Retrograde at 50% off until January 8th. Please go to my website for more information. http://www.mariebargas.com.
Kali, the Hindu Dark Goddess of Time and Destruction is startling figure of carnage. The gruesome necklace of heads around her neck drips blood onto her bare breasts as she stands poised for battle or for a carnal embrace. In the West many misinterpret those heads as human. But in actuality they are the heads of demons that she has slain. Her unabashed sense of self has always had a great appeal, especially nowadays to a new generation of women who refuse to be silenced, held back or held down. But in my case, my peers still struggle to rein me in every now and then when I can’t contain my righteous anger. Throughout my own life I have suffered abuse first as a child and later as an adult. But today abuse seems to have come out of the closet and become the standard bearer for the Patriarchy as it begins to struggle in very public death throes around the world. Remember the remark about “pussy grabbing” that was almost dismissed as “locker room talk?” This is the Patriarchal tactic of invoking the myth that women actually want to be “pussy grabbed” by rich, entitled white men. As I recall it didn’t go over well, did it?
Mea culpa. When Fox News in Chicago reported that Angela Ferguson grabbed a beer stein and fought off her attacker (rapist) I experienced a new kind of “feels” that I identify as “power.”
“When I kept hitting him, hitting him, he wouldn’t give up. He wouldn’t give up. I kept beating him, and seen blood everywhere. They say he had to have three surgeries on his head,” Ferguson said.
Somehow Ferguson pushed Grice out of her room, but she said he broke the door down and got back in. That’s when she grabbed a crowbar from under her bed and fought him off once and for all.
I’ve been molested and so let me make something perfectly clear, if I had the opportunity to fight off my molester with a crow bar I may have suffered more physical harm, but the emotional toll would have been far less. In fact if I had the opportunity to bash in his head in self defense I guarantee you that I would have slept soundly that night. Because I’m a woman I already know that some of you are cringing with distaste at my confession, but I’d like to tell my sisters out there who have been raped or molested that wanting to beat down the ass of your rapist/attacker is perfectly normal. And please don’t tell me that being molested doesn’t warrant a proper head bashing. It’s not going to work.
In fact it’s much healthier if you embrace it and accept it instead of internalizing some missed placed guilt over it being “your fault.” This is what I identify as “Decapitating the Demons.” Accept the fact that you want blood, revenge and retribution. Do something pro-active. Buy a gun and learn how to use it responsibly. Take a class in martial arts and self defense. Put cameras up around your home. Carry a stun gun or pepper spray in your purse. Don’t just roll over and take it. You don’t have to accept the cultural brainwashing that we must submit to being victims in order to be “good” people. I would not “turn the other cheek” if a rapist’s cock was being shoved up my ass. Would you?
I have my own “necklace of demon heads” and I add a new one every couple of years. I’m not proud of it, but I’m also not ashamed of it. It is there to remind me that I cannot rely on someone else, the police, the government a boyfriend or even a stranger to protect me. And there’s something more. In Kali’s hand she holds her newest severed head without shame, and without malice. She just holds it and we can see it’s frightened eyes. Think of it as a “deterrent.”
Listen carefully now.
It’s okay for people to know that you are not someone who is going to be an easy target, a willing victim or a passive plaything for their perverse enjoyment. You don’t have to roll over every single time and “play dead” just to “play nice.” If someone repeatedly insists on attacking you for no other reason than they enjoy it, or it fulfills some warped psychological need, then you don’t have to allow them to get bored with you and move on. You are allowed to “sever their head.” Read the laws. Follow the rules … but take that head and hold it in your hand for all to see.

In the aftermath of the election reports of incidents or racism, sexism and bigotry are rising at an alarming rate. Just this week a woman told me to “pack my bags” if I didn’t like Trump, implying that I should go back to the Philippines. She then went on to say that I was in for a “big surprise” which I took as meaning that racism would be more widely accepted and supported by the government and by law enforcement. Her veiled threats made me cringe.
I’m a naturalized citizen who speaks 3 languages, graduated from the Claremont Colleges, is gainfully employed and enthusiastic about volunteering for social causes. Somehow in her home in rural Ohio she first friended me because she thought I as interesting, but now she thinks that she can openly judge me and “my kind” without fear because the “Trump Effect” has made racism and bigotry fashionable.
Meanwhile, one of my gay friends was sad to report that he was shamed publicly for being gay on his way to work at a beauty salon. In the worst case a friend just shared that her daughter who was raped by her father is still being forced by social services to see her rapist on scheduled visits. Obviously, the government and law enforcement is failing to address these and other issues. The reasons are too many to mention. So, we as private citizens have to literally “fend for ourselves” when it comes to our personal protection.
Ice Box or Freezer Spells come primarily from the Hoodoo Magickal Tradition. According to ConjureDoctor.com
“Hoodoo (also known as rootwork) is Southern folk magic grounded in centuries of African American heritage within the southern United States. Hoodoo is often known by other names including: conjure, rootwork, root doctoring, laying tricks, working roots or doing the “work”. It is important to note, that contrary to what some authors may write in their books, Hoodoo is NOT Voodoo (Vodou). Hoodoo blends together the magical technology of Congo slaves that were taken from Africa in the slave trade, combined with Native American herbal knowledge, bits of European folk magic and Jewish mysticism.”
The Freezer Binding:
Basic: This popular method of binding is quick and easy. The name of the abuser is written on a piece of paper and frozen in a ziploc bag filled with water.
Extra Ingredients in the Water: In special cases other ingredients are added to the water including alum, vinegar or even urine.
Nine Names: Another method is to write the abuser’s name on a piece of paper 9 times. The paper is then folded 9 times and wrapped with a black thread or yarn 9 times before it is frozen. For added “oomph” I put a pinch of salt and a pinch of alum on the paper before folding it up and wrapping it tightly with a black thread.
Garlic: Another method is to crush a glove of garlic with your fist while thinking of the abuser. Rub that glove of garlic on the paper with the names of the abuser 13 times pushing the clove away from you.
To Discourage Sexual Harassment: I put alum and salt in the water and if the binding is to discourage sexual harassment, I also put in 3 pinches of Salt Peter which traditionally is supposed to cause impotence.
If these spells are used for self defense then the karmic debt is minimal if you are mindful of your intent.
